Next generation Skoda Fabia – a speculated return to India

Skoda Auto is an ancient Czech Republic based automobile company, originally founded in the year 1890. Skoda started its operations in India as Skoda Auto India Private Limited in 2001 and has been delivering admirable cars since then. Fabia is a mini car globally produced by Skoda in the year 1999 and which made its entry into Indian car market first in 2008.However, it did not do exceedingly well in the market, forcing Skoda to stop its production. One reason for this may be that the brand Skoda in India is associated with luxury sedans and not practical hatchbacks. The company has now plans to re-launch the third generation Fabia here, which is ready to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014. It is expected to be launched in the country in 2015 or early 2016 in the B-segment.

The 2015 Skoda Fabia is based on VW’s MQB-A platform and it borrows design cues from the VisionD concept. The car will be lighter and have a longer wheelbase. The car comes with radical changes in terms of exterior design and driving dynamics. The front grille will be wider with prominent lines on the hood and sides. It will have re-designed hatch-door, front and rear bumpers and tail lamps. However, the overall dimensions and roomy interiors have been passed on in its entirety to the new generation hatch. The boot space will be increased to 350 litres now apart from some clever storage spaces inside the cabin. The new car will also feature perfect fit and finish as seen in most other Skoda cars.

 The new Fabia will be offered in both petrol and diesel engines. Both will be mated to a five speed manual gearbox as standard or a DSG double clutch unit for the petrol unit alone. The petrol engines are a 1.0-liter three cylinder and a 1.2-liter four-cylinder unit, which will be offered with either the five-speed manual or the seven speed DSG. The diesel engine is a 1.4 liter three cylinder unit that will offer power ranging from 75 bhp to 105 bhp. There will also be a Greenline diesel unit fitted with start/stop, energy recuperation and low rolling resistance tyres, which will debut by the end of 2015. However, it is not sure whether all these engines will be available in India.

Skoda Fabia’s greatest advantage is that though it is put up as a city driven hatchback, it is well suited for highway driving as well. Skoda Fabia is available in the Indian market at a starting price of Rs 4.80 lakh. This price is expected to remain more or less the same.
